Who is Kernigh?

Some web sites collect personal information from users, so they can sell advertising. The name of this process is social networking. I have not yet created a public profile for a social networking site. Instead I have this page.

I am Kernigh. I edit wiki, play RogueLike games, and make hacks of computer software. This site, kernigh.pbwiki.com, is my personal website and wiki.

Roguelike games

There was Rogue, a computer game for BSD. Now there is an entire RogueLike genre of games. These games traditionally have a world drawn of ASCII tiles, unlimited time for turns, random terrain, limited field of view, unidentified items, and permanent death. These features combine into a very difficult game. Most players rarely win, or never win. I have not yet found the Amulet of Yendor.

I play roguelike games at three different public servers. These servers keep GameRecordings (in ttyrec format) of my efforts.

Game Information and ttyrecs
DungeonCrawl Kernigh upon akrasiac
NetHack Kernigh upon NAO
SlashEm Kernigh at Pallas

I play some other games on my own OpenBSD system.

Wiki contributions

I have contributed to many wikis, as User:Kernigh at Wikihack, as UserPageKernigh at ToME wiki, as Kernigh here at PBwiki, and at several other places; my WikiNode has the full list.

The word wiki means quick. Wiki provides a quick way to create documentation, notes, essays and other web pages. Wiki can collect large amounts of information. I believe that Wikihack (nethack.wikia.com) is the largest website about NetHack!

Source code / Hacking

I now have my own Subversion repository at OpenSvn, to contain source code. The repository began with two projects:

  1. My branch of Xtank, an old computer game. I was hacking Xtank to make it work with a modern computer.
  2. ObjectNecromancer, an attempted set of scripts for installing roguelike games and other software onto my computer. I was hacking these scripts to learn about CMake and the build process.

The majority of recent commits go to other projects. At year 2009, I began to learn about Super NES hacking, with my project to Find 40th Fibonacci number.

Some of my hacks are not in my repository. One of these is the brass interface patch, which I made at year 2006 for NetHackBrass players like myself. The patch contains bug fixes, especially for Unix players, and ports of interface patches that other hackers created for vanilla NetHack.

IRC

Since 30 January 2006, I have the name Kernigh upon Freenode, the IRC network at irc.freenode.net. Since 2008, I have mostly stopped using IRC. I am now unlikely to appear in any IRC channels.

First appearance

The name Kernigh first appeared upon the internet with my first comment to the webcomic called Dudley's Dungeon. The comment reads:

Geckos are green,

Iguanas are brown,

If : is a newt

Then Dudley is down.

-- Kernigh, 6 April 2005

The name Kernigh has that random-syllable feel that works well in fantasy settings such as certain roguelike games. The etymology is from Kern- (from the English kernel, the inside of a seed) and -nigh (from an imaginary language, a suffix to mean "animal" or "human"), so the name means kernel animal.

In roguelike games, some of my characters use the name Kernigh. I usually have about 50% female characters and 50% male characters, but these fractions drop to about 33% for games like ToME that allow female, male and neuter characters.
